Jones College wins Halbrook Award for academic achievement

JACKSON – The Jones College women's athletic teams have been recognized for academic excellence.

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning recognized Jones with the Halbrook Award for Academic Achievement.

Jones shares the title with Northwest Mississippi for the Mississippi Community College Division, which goes to the schools with the highest percentage of academic achievement for the women's division, focusing on graduation rates.

It is the first time for Jones to receive the award.

The Bobcats had a 100 percent graduation rate from its four women's athletic teams (volleyball was not eligible because it was the first year of the program) with 24 total graduates from the base number.

Totals for each team were:
Women's Basketball: 2/2
Women's Soccer: 10/10
Softball: 8/8
Women's Tennis: 4/4

In addition, each school selected a male and female recipient student athlete who excel in academics, leadership and service.

Soccer's Caroline Wilson was the female recipient and golf's Sebastian Nowak was the male recipient from Jones College.

Students athletes from Mississippi's public, private, two-year and four-year postsecondary institutions are honored each for their classroom achievements.

The Halbrook Award for Academic Achievement Among Athletes was established in 1984 through the passage of House Concurrent Resolution No. 88. The awards program is made possible through endowments from former Rep. David M. Halbrook and his brothers, John C. and James G. Halbrook of Belzoni and J.A. Halbrook of Beaumont, Texas, in honor of their parents, John C. and Ernestine McCall Halbrook.
