Former Bobcat Scottie Phillips named as running backs coach

ELLISVILLE – A familiar face is returning to Jones College.

Lytrel Pollard has named Scottie Phillips, a standout running back at Jones in 2016-2017, as the Bobcats' running backs coach.

Phillips played at South Jones High School from 2013-15 before going to Jones. He rushed for 1,600 yards and scored 22 touchdowns in his senior year for the Braves, averaging 163.0 yards per game, as a first team all-state selection.

With the Bobcats, Phillips rushed for over 1,000 yards in both years and was named an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention as a freshman.

Phillips led Jones to an 8-2 record in 2017, the MACJC South Division title and the school's first playoff appearance in four years. He rushed for 1,112 yards as a freshman, which ranked fifth in the nation. His 123.6 yards per game average was second in the MACJC and third nationally.

As a sophomore, Phillips rushed for 1,070 yards, which was third in the state and 12th in the country, and led the team in scoring with 13 touchdowns.

Phillips' 2,182 yards and 27 touchdowns both rank second all-time at Jones.

He was rated the No. 1 running back in the state by ESPN and 247Sports and No. 11 overall JUCO player in the state before signing with Ole Miss.

In his junior season with the Rebels, he started 10 games, rushed for 927 yards, which was ninth in the SEC, and scored 12 touchdowns. He rushed for a school-record 204 yards in his debut vs. Texas Tech in 2018 and was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.

He averaged 70 yards rushing per game in his two seasons at Ole Miss. He ended his career 11th in career rushing touchdowns (17) and 17th in rushing yards (1,470).

He then signed as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans of the NFL, appearing in 11 games over the 2020-21 seasons. He rushed for 22 yards and had three receptions with the team.

Phillips played his final professional season with the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in 2023.

This will be Phillips' first coaching job.
