ELLISVILLE – Jones College made the plays when it needed to down the stretch and defeated Copiah-Lincoln 74-70 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It was the first MACCC victory of the season for the Bobcats, who are now 4-14 overall and 1-4 in the league. Co-Lin drops to 11-9 and 1-4.
Zharia Leflore (Neshoba Central) led the Bobcats with 18 points.
Aasia Wilson (West Jones) had 17 points and six rebounds and
Carolina de Domingo (Spain) had 10 points and four assists.
Larissa Hubbard (Harrison Central) had 10 rebounds to go with seven points and
Anna-Patrice Patterson (Bay Springs) came off the bench to grab eight rebounds.
Angel Wilkinson had a game-high 35 points to lead the Lady Wolves. Kamaiyah Pruitt had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Co-Lin got off to a quick start and led 9-2 just over two minutes into the game. The Bobcats battled back to tie it up at 19-19 after the first quarter.
Wilson's layup with 6:01 left in the first half gave Jones the lead for good at 28-27. The Bobcats took their longest lead of the night at 40-29 on a Wilson layup with 2:36 left in the second quarter. Jones led 42-35 at halftime.
A Wilkinson 3-pointer pulled the Lady Wolves within 44-43 with 6:55 to play in the third quarter. But Jones had a 7-0 run and went up 51-43 on a Leflore layup with 4:17 showing. The Bobcats led 55-50 entering the final period.
A Wilkinson layup with 22 seconds left pulled Co-Lin within 69-67, but they would get no closer. Jones made five of its final six free throw attempts to seal it.
Jones was 23-of-56 from the floor for 41 percent, 6-of-15 from 3-point range for 40 percent and 22-of-37 from the foul line for 60 percent. The Lady Wolves were 28-of-57 from the field for 49 percent, 3-of-17 from 3-point range for 18 percent and 11-of-23 from the free throw line for 48 percent.
The Bobcats forced 21 turnovers and turned those into 24 points. Jones committed 19 turnovers. The Bobcats outrebounded Co-Lin, 41-34.
Jones visits East Mississippi on Monday. Co-Lin hosts Mississippi Delta on Monday.
