Southwest snaps Jones' 10-game win streak

ELLISVILLE – Southwest has been a thorn in the Bobcats' side for the last four years, and on Monday night, snapped Jones' season-long 10-game winning streak with an 81-78 win.

The Bears, who've won five straight and seven of nine over Jones, improved to 11-9, 2-3 in the MACCC. Jones dropped its first in league play and fell to 18-4, 5-1.

Southwest came out firing and led 15-4 just five minutes in.

Jones settled in and scored 11 of the next 14 to pull within a basket thanks to five straight from Malik Franklin.

Southwest led 37-33 at the half.

LJ Hackman's layup tied the game at 37-37, but Southwest would push it back out to six minutes later.

Trailing 51-46, a 12-2 Bobcat run gave Jones a 58-53 lead. Back-to-back jumpers by Ky Pernell and Trey Smith allowed Jones to take its largest lead of the night.

Jones led from the 11:35 mark until the 1:14 mark when Tylik Weeks' layup gave the Bears a 77-76 lead.

Jones led by a game-high eight, 76-68, with 2:51 to play but Southwest erased the deficit almost immediately.

Pernell's layup off an assist from Dimp Pernell with 47 seconds left gave Jones a 78-77 lead, but Jahshawne Joseph's tip-in at the other end allowed Southwest to go back in front, 79-78 with 34 ticks left.

A would-be go-ahead layup from Smith with 31 seconds left was blocked and a second attempt with 7 seconds left was also blocked by the Bears.

Southwest was able to salt it away at the line and a last-second heave from D. Pernell was no-good.

Tylik Weeks was dominant for the Bears, finishing with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Three other Bears scored in double figures.

Dimp led Jones with 20 points and six rebounds. Ky added 19 points and seven rebounds, Hackman 14-9 and Smith 13 and eight.

Both teams shot above 40 percent.

Jones travels to Co-Lin Thursday.
