ELLISVILLE – Jones College took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and went on to defeat Arkansas State Mid-South 70-63 here Tuesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It was the first win of the year for Jones, now 1-2. ASU Mid-South falls to 0-4.
Jones trailed 7-3 and then scored 10 straight points, capped by a
Zharia Leflore (Neshoba Central) layup to take a 13-7 lead with 4:04 to play in the opening period.
The Bobcats opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run to take control. Two
Larissa Hubbard (Harrison Central) free throws made it 27-10 with 6:31 showing in the second quarter. Jones led 33-17 at halftime.
Jones maintained a 51-37 advantage heading into the final quarter, but the Greyhounds battled back to within 60-56 on a Lula-Jae Tranfaglia layup with 5:14 remaining. But the Bobcats outscored ASUMS 10-7 down the stretch to get the victory.
Shay Hunter (Neshoba Central) led the Bobcats with 22 points, Leflore added 14 and
Aasia Wilson (West Jones) had nine.
A'tyia Allen (Neshoba Central) came off the bench to grab seven rebounds and Hunter and
Carolina de Domingo (Spain) each had four assists.
London Robinson had 22 points and six rebounds for the Greyhounds. Charalyn Rester added 15 points and Zarriah Adams had 14. Tranfaglia had nine rebounds.
Jones was 24-of-62 from the field for 39 percent, 9-of-27 from three-point range for 33 percent and 13-of-21 from the free throw line. ASUMS was 18-of-45 from the floor for 40 percent, 2-of-0 from beyond the arc for 22 percent and 25-of-33 from the foul line.
The Greyhounds outrebounded Jones, 37-31, and committed 26 turnovers compared to 14 for the Bobcats.
Jones visits Bishop State (Alabama) for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Friday. ASUMS hosts Northeast Mississippi on Thursday.
