La'Genesis Johnson (Choctaw County) scored 10 points and pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds, but it was not enough for Jones College to overcome Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Bulldogs defeated Jones 56-44 here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium. MGCCC is now 11-3 overall and 4-0 in MACCC play. The Bobcats fall to 4-11, 0-4.
Johnson also had 10 points as she posted her fifth double-double of the season.
Khyla Ragins (Harrison Central) had 14 points and seven assists and
Aasia Wilson (West Jones) added seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs scored the game's first eight points, but Jones battled back to tie it at 11-11 with 1:15 showing in the first quarter when Johnson scored. MGCCC led 13-11 after the opening quarter.
MGCCC outscored Jones 17-6 in the second quarter and led 30-17 at intermission.
Tytiana Buckley's layup gave the Bulldogs its longest lead of the evening at 36-17 with 8:38 left in the third quarter.
Chrystianna Beeman's (Pelahatchie) layup cut the lead to 42-31, but a 3-pointer by Ja'sharreah Hunt gave MGCCC a 45-31 advantage going into the final quarter.
Beeman's layup with 6:05 remaining in the fourth quarter got Jones within 49-39, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get.
Je'Mya Evans had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Hunt added 11 points and Simaru Fields had 10 points and eight rebounds. Buckley finished with 13 rebounds to go with nine points.
Jones was 21-of-66 from the field for 32 percent, just 1-of-12 from 3-point range for eight percent and only 1-of-6 from the foul line for 17 percent. MGCCC was 24-of-64 from the floor for 38 percent, 4-of-16 from beyond the arc for 25 percent and just 4-of-10 from the free throw line for 40 percent.
MGCCC outrebounded Jones, 50-41, and committed 15 turnovers compared to 14 for the Bobcats.
Jones visits Northwest on Thursday. MGCCC will host Mississippi Delta on Thursday.
