Jones splits opening day at Shelton State behind Wax's grand slam

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Jakob Wax hit an 11th inning grand slam to lift Jones to a season-opening win before Shelton State got a walk-off grand slam in Game 2 to split the doubleheader Monday night at Martin Field.

Jones will host Lawson State on Valentine's Day for its home-opener.

Game 1 – Jones 10, Shelton State 6 (11 inn.)

Wax and Gatlin Sanders combined for eight RBIs and Jones was able to rally back in the 11th after allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth that forced extras.

Jones' first run of the year came off a Sanders sac fly in the third, scoring Randall Futral who reached on a hit-by-pitch.

The Bobcat lead was 6-2 in the eighth before the Bucs rallied with a solo run in the eighth on an RBI-single and took advantage of four walks in the ninth to tie it at 6-6.

Wax's grand slam in the 11th was setup by a pair of walks and a Beau Bryans single to load the bases. Wax then homered to left with two outs to put Jones ahead for good.

Five Bobcats finished with multiple hits as part of a 14-hit game. Sanders was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Bryans, Tristan Pearson, Wax and Chase Honeycutt had two hits apiece.

Charlee Strickland cleaned up the damage in the ninth and would throw two scoreless innings with five strikeouts to get the win. Colby Tubre tossed a scoreless bottom of the 11th.

Game 2 – Shelton State 7, Jones 5

After a grand slam helped Jones to a game one win, it was Shelton State who used Wes Helms' grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off the Bobcats in the nightcap.

Helms' grand slam was aided by a pair of walks and a single after a leadoff strikeout.

Jones jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks in large part to Luke Lycette's two-run blast to left in the second and his RBI-single in the fourth.

The Bucs would score the game's final six runs with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth before the grand slam.

Drew Druckenmiller's first career start produced nine strikeouts over 4.1 no-decision innings.
