POPLARVILLE – Jones College trailed No. 4 LSU Eunice 4-3 heading into the eighth inning of their NJCAA Region 23 Tournament Semifinal and elimination game here Wednesday.
But the Bengals scored twice in the eighth and five times in the ninth and pulled away for an 11-3 victory over the Bobcats here at Dub Herring Park on the campus of Pearl River.
The loss ends the Bobcats' season at 32-17.
LSU Eunice, 40-16, has to beat unbeaten and top-ranked Pearl River twice to win the title. The Bengals and Wildcats meet at 4 p.m. on Thursday with the "if necessary" game slated for 4 p.m. Friday.
In Wednesday's other games, Hinds eliminated East Mississippi, 10-4, and Pearl River ousted Hinds, 6-5 in 12 innings in a game that ended early Thursday morning.
Jones was down by only one run, but the Bengals got RBI-singles from Alexander Saunier and Carter Quinn to go up 6-3 in the top of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, LSU Eunice sent 11 batters to the plate, got three base hits and took advantage of two walks and four Bobcat errors to score five runs.
The game started off well for Jones as
Josh Cary (Petal) doubled and scored on
Billy Garrity's (Sumrall) single to take a 1-0 lead in the second.
The Bengals took the lead in the third. Christian Gonzalez led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Peyton LeJeune hit a two-out solo home run over the right field wall to make it 2-1.
Jones tied it at 2-2 in the fifth when
Murray Hutchinson (Madison Central) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and
DeeJay Booth (Oak Grove) followed with a walk. A wild pitch advanced the runners and
Colson Harris' (West Jones) sacrifice fly to center drove in Hutchinson.
LSU Eunice scored twice in the sixth.
LeJeune led off the inning with a walk and, with two outs, Saunier was hit by a pitch. Cole Romero followed with an RBI single and a throwing error back to the infield advanced the runners a base. Saunier would then score on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out rally.
Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) reached on an infield hit, Hutchinson walked and Booth followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3.
Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) drew a walk to load the bases, but a ground out ended the inning.
Cary doubled and singled and Garrity singled twice. Hutchinson, Booth and Honeycutt added singles.
Starter
Colby Tubre (D'Iberville) went 5.2 innings, pitched effectively, but was tagged with the loss to fall to 6-2. He allowed four runs (three earned), four hits, walked two and struck out three.
Blake Summerlin (Northwest Rankin),
Drew Druckenmiller (Mobile, Alabama),
Kace Matthews (West Jones),
Cade Mattison (Lamar Christian) and
Joshua Sullivan (Brandon) also pitched for the Bobcats.
Brendan Moody pitched the first 5.0 innings and got the win, improving to 2-0. He gave up two runs, four hits, walked two and struck out two. Aiden Vossburg, Drew Lasseigne and Jackson Rodriguez also pitched for LSU Eunice.
Kole Myers, Bryce LaRocca and Saunier each singled twice for the Bengals. LeJeune homered with Quinn, Cade Hart, Romero, Grant Mangrum and Gonzalez added singles.
