No. 12 Bobcat women capture second straight region championship

ELLISVILLE – The No. 12 Jones College Bobcats have done it again.
 
Jones downed Meridian 5-2 in the Region 23 Tournament finals here Saturday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. It was the second consecutive region crown for the Bobcats.
 
The Bobcats (25-2) will travel to Tucson, Arizona, May 7-11 for the NJCAA Division I Tournament. Jones earlier won the MACCC championship with a perfect 18-0 regular season record.
 
Jones won two of the doubles' points.
 
Addy Seward (Richland) and Michaela Anderson (Tupelo) beat Sarah Cline and Kamryn Rodriguez in No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Allie Johnson (Hernando) and Sophie Endt (Vancleave) whipped Isabella Warham and Harper Bryan in No. 3 doubles, 8-1. In No. 1 doubles, Ana Julissa De Mata and Ally Bowen beat Mia Höddinghaus (Germany) and Sarah Powell (Madison-Ridgeland Academy), 8-4. 
 
Seward beat Bowen in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Powell whipped Warham in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Johnson downed Cline in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3. De Mata defeated Höddinghaus in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
 
Jones played the championship match without its top player, Andrea Vlasceanu. Vlasceanu was injured during Friday's semifinals.
 
After the tournament, season awards were presented.
 
Jones head coach Brooks Buffington was named Region 23 and MACCC Coach of the Year.
 
Vlasceanu and Höddinghaus were named Region 23 No. 1 doubles champion of the year for posting a 14-1 record.
 
Seward and Höddinghaus were both named All-MACCC and Seward was named the conference's Player of the Year.
 
Gulf Coast defeated Hinds 5-2 in the consolation match. The top three teams in the tournament advance to nationals.
