Jones gets boost with Tubre's return, splits with Gulf Coast

ELLISVILLE – Making his first start since March 20 in game two, Colby Tubre tossed five shutout innings and Josh Cary went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs to help Jones split with rival Gulf Coast Tuesday night at The Bank.

Gulf Coast spoiled Kade Keeton's second-longest start of his career in a 3-1 game one win. On the other side of the bump, Bulldog starter Adam May, who came in 0-3 with a 10.70 ERA, was superb in 6.1 innings, striking out six Bobcats and allowing just one run.

Jones moved to 22-12 overall and 9-9 in the MACCC, currently tied with Gulf Coast for sixth in the standings. The Bulldogs fell to 14-19, 9-9 in league play.

Gulf Coast 3, Jones 1

Murray Hutchinson's RBI-single in the second was all the run support Jones could give Keeton as Bulldog pitching held Jones scoreless the final six frames.

Alex McWhorter's two-run double gave MGCCC a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

Sean Smith's RBI-single in the fifth plated the final run of the game.

Jesse Johnson tossed the final 2.2 innings for the Bulldogs to earn his first save of the year. Blake Summerlin threw three scoreless with five strikeouts in relief of Keeton.

Tyler Ducksworth had two of the Bobcats' five hits.

Jones 8, Gulf Coast 0

Facing Gulf Coast's best arm in Luke Reed, Jones roughed him up for eight earned runs in the first four innings to cruise to a game two win.

Reed had allowed just 14 earned runs in 53.2 innings coming in, but the Bobcats hung eight on him in 3.2 innings.

Colson Harris plated the first two runs for Jones on a fielder's choice in the first and groundout in the third.

Cary had the first of his three hits in the third, scoring DeeJay Booth after a walk.

Jones blew it open with a five-run fourth, highlighted by Ducksworth's two-run single and Cary's two-run triple. Hutchinson's infield single in the inning gave him his 100th career hit as a Bobcat.

Tubre improved to 4-1 with a team-best 1.63 ERA, scattering four hits, five strikeouts and no walks. Drew Druckenmiller threw the final two innings, striking out four.

Jones will travel to Coahoma on Friday for a noon first pitch. Those games will most likely not be broadcasted.
