Coahoma rallies to defeat No. 21 Jones, 67-58

ELLISVILLE – Coahoma overcame a 16-point, first quarter deficit and went on to defeat No. 21 Jones College 67-58 here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
The Bobcats dropped their second MACCC game in a row, falling to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in league play. The Tigers are now 13-5 overall, 7-3 in conference play.

It's Jones' first back-to-back regular season losses in six years. 
 
Jones got off to a hot start, taking a 14-2 lead on a Meloney Thames (Choctaw Central) layup with 6:08 left in the opening period. The Bobcats took its longest lead of the evening when Nakyah Jones (Mobile, Alabama) made a layup with 53 seconds left in the opening period to make it 26-10. Jones led 26-14 after one quarter.
 
But Coahoma responded with a big second quarter. The Tigers trailed 30-19 midway through the quarter, but outscored Jones 14-2 the rest of the half and led 33-32 at halftime. 
 
A Thames layup put Jones ahead 49-44 with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. Nakia Cheatham hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 49-47 after three quarters.
 
The game went back and forth in the final period and Sakyia White's (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) layup with 2:08 left tied the game at 58-58.
 
But Jones would not score again for the remainder of the contest.
 
Ashanti Backus hit a jumper in the lane to put the Tigers up 60-58 with 1:59 to play. Jones missed a shot at the 1:40 mark, turned the ball over with 46 seconds left and missed another chance to tie the game with 31 seconds showing.
 
Elisha Wilson's layup with 19 seconds to play put Coahoma ahead 62-58. After another Bobcat miss, Wilson made another layup and Tiara Abron hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final margin.
 
Thames topped Jones with 17 points, White added 16 points and nine rebounds and Olivia Knight (Pearl) had 13 points. Knight and Mackenzie Thomas (Laurel) each had four assists and Jones had four steals.
 
Cheatham had 19 points (including four 3-pointers) and 18 rebounds. Wilson had 19 points and nine rebounds and Abron had 11 points. 
 
The Bobcats made 26-of-69 shots from the floor for 38 percent, 4-of-21 from beyond the arc for 19 percent and only 2-of-4 free throws for 50 percent.
 
Coahoma hit 26-of-68 field goals for 38 percent, 8-of-21 from 3-point range for 38 percent and 7-of-10 free throws for 70 percent.
 
The Tigers out-rebounded Jones, 52-34.
 
Jones outscored Coahoma 34-26 on points in the paint and 20-11 in points off turnovers. The Tigers outscored the Bobcats 16-10 on second chance points.
 
The Bobcats will travel to East Central for a 6 p.m. Thursday contest.
 
Coahoma hosts Mississippi Delta on Thursday.
