GOODMAN – Jones used a two-hitter from
Zach Flaskamp in relief in the opener and rallied for six unanswered runs in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader at Holmes 9-1 and 9-6 to close out the MACCC regular season.
Winners in seven of its last 10, Jones improved to 24-18, 17-11 in the MACCC to setup an outside shot of hosting a best-of-3 playoff series May 7-9. Holmes ended its season at 5-33.
Nine different Bobcats combined for the 18 runs on 18 hits, including
Jesse Johnson who had a 4-for-8 day with a home run, three RBIs and a save in 1.2 innings on the bump.
East Mississippi and Hinds close out the conference season on Monday. If the Lions can win one, Jones would host Hinds. If Hinds sweeps, Jones travels to Hinds in two weeks.
Game 1 – Jones 9, Holmes 1 (7 inn)
The Bobcat jumped on top early with four runs in the first and Flaskamp scattered two hits over five frames in a seven-inning run-rule victory.
Kade Keeton's RBI-double got the scoring started. He was followed by an RBI-single from Johnson and two more Bobcats scored on passed balls.
Alex Frillma's RBI-double in the bottom of the first, off
Kameron Partridge, was Holmes' lone run.
Hunter French's RBI-single extended the lead to 7-1 in the third.
Flaskamp (3-2) struck out seven and walked two for the win.
Andrew Nix tossed a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2 – Jones 9, Holmes 6
The Bulldogs took a 6-3 lead after two, but Jones was able to score the game's final six runs, thanks in large part to three Holmes errors, over the last five innings to close out a two-game sweep.
Johnson's solo homer in the third pulled Jones within 6-4.
Knowing how important a sweep was, the Bobcats went to closer
Garrett Langrell in the third inning to stay within striking distance.
Langrell worked 3.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out six and Jones slowly climbed back into it.
Tyler Ducksworth singled and came around to score on French's fielder's choice in the fifth. A batter later,
Murray Hutchinson tied the game at 6-6 with a two-out single to left.
Jones then took its first lead of the game, 7-6 in the sixth, when
DeeJay Booth singled, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a groundout.
The Bobcats added two insurance runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and double play ball.
Johnson retired the Bulldog side in order in the seventh to earn his first save of the year.
Hutchinson was 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot to lead the Bobcats' 12-hit attack. Eight Bobcats had a hit in the game two win.
