Bobcats drop two to Hinds on Saturday; season comes to an end

RAYMOND – After winning game one on Friday evening, all Jones College had to do was beat Hinds once here Saturday at Joe G. Moss Field.
 
It did not happen.
 
The Eagles used a five-run sixth inning to beat Jones 9-4 in game two of the series. In the deciding game three, Hinds rallied from a 5-0 sixth inning deficit and defeated the Bobcats 13-5 in eight innings in the Region 23 qualifier. Jones had won the series opener, 7-4.
 
Jones ends the season at 25-20.
 
Hinds, 24-18, advances to the Region 23 Tournament May 17-20 at Pearl River. The six-team field will be comprised of the host Wildcats, Hinds, East Central, Itawamba, Meridian and LSU Eunice.
 
Friday
Game 1 – Jones 7, Hinds 4

Jones jumped out to a 7-1 lead through six and a half and rode the arm of Dalton Rogers to a Game 1 win in the best-of-3 series.

The Bobcats weathered a three-run seventh and a pair of errors to hold off a late push from the Eagles.

Trailing 1-0 after four, a five-run fifth was the difference. Preston Ratliff singled to score one, Jesse Johnson scored another on a fielder's choice and the Bobcats took advantage of six Eagle walks to eventually plate three more.

Rogers allowed six hits and four runs over eight innings, striking out 12. Garrett Langrell threw one inning of relief and picked up his sixth save.
 
Saturday 
Game 2 – Hinds 9, Jones 4

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by DeeJay Booth (Oak Grove). Jones made it 2-1 in the second when Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) was hit by a pitch and would score on a Hunter French (DeSoto Central) single.
 
Murray Hutchinson's (Madison Central) RBI ground out scored Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) in the fourth and put the Bobcats up, 3-2. Trailing 4-3 going into the sixth, Jones tied it when Honeycutt led off with a base it and advanced on an error. He was sacrificed to third by French and scored on Kade Keeton's (Brandon) single.
 
But the Eagles sent nine batters to the plate and broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth.
 
A two-run double by Purdue commit Pablo Lanzarote gave the Eagles a 7-4 lead. He scored on an error on the same play to make it 8-4. Caleb Sterling followed with a solo home run to right to end the scoring.
 
Zach Flaskamp (Southeast Lauderdale) pitched an inning in relief, allowing five runs on four hits. He was tagged with the loss and ends the year at 3-3. Starter Wyatt Blalock (Madison Central) went 5.0 innings, allowed four runs, eight hits, walked two and struck out four. Andrew Nix (Stringer) pitched the final 2.0 inning, allowed no runs, no hits and struck out two.
 
Booth had three singles for the Bobcats.
 
Matthew Taylor pitched the final 4.0 innings and got the win for Hinds. He allowed no runs, three hits and struck out three. Starter Brooks Auger went 5.0 innings, allowed four runs, six hits, walked three, hit two and struck out six.
 
Sterling homered and singled, Vantrel Reed double twice and Tristan Tigrett doubled and singled for Hinds.
 
Game 3 – Hinds 13, Jones 5 (8 inn.)
The Bobcats took a 4-0 lead in the third when Keeton had an RBI single and Booth followed with a three-run home run.
 
Jones made it 5-0 in the sixth when Jesse Johnson (Purvis) walked and scored on Ducksworth's RBI single.
 
The Eagles got on the board with a two-run home run from Sterling in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Hinds sent nine batters to the plate and took a 7-5 lead in the seventh. Lanzarote's three-run home run capped the inning.
 
The Eagles again sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored six runs to end it. 
 
Starter Kameron Partidge (West Lauderdale) was solid for Jones. He went 6.1 innings, allowed four runs, eight hits, walked none and struck out four. Garrett Langrell (Bay) got the loss to end the year at 4-3. He pitched .1 of an inning, allowed three runs and three hits. Cole Mozingo (Northeast Jones) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up five runs (four earned), three hits, a walk and posting two strikeouts. Johnson pitched to two batters, got a strikeout, but that batter reached base on an error. He also gave up a hit.
 
Noah Magee pitched the final 2.0 innings and got the win. He gave up a single and struck out three. Sterling, the starter, went. 5.0 innings, allowed four runs, five hits, walked two and struck out three. Gage Bihm pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run, one hit and recorded a strikeout.
 
Every batter in the lineup had at least one hit for Hinds and six Eagles had multiple hits.
