ELLISVILLE – Jones College needed a spark in its game with Hinds here Thursday afternoon at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Ashton Campbell (Forrest County AHS) gave it to them.
Campbell made a 80-foot shot as the buzzer sounded at halftime to give Jones a 28-26 lead. The Bobcats used the momentum into the second half and went on to a 69-64 victory over the Bulldogs.
Campbell finished the game with a career-high 27 points with 17 of those coming in the first half.
Tradavis Thompson (Raymond) took over in the second half, scoring all of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes.
It was the fifth straight victory for Jones, now 6-4 overall and in the MACCC. The Bobcats will host No. 9 Pearl River at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24.
Hinds, 8-2 overall and in the conference, hosts Pearl River on Saturday.
The Bulldogs led 14-8 midway through the first half. Jordan Johnson's two free throws with 1.2 seconds showing put Hinds up, 26-25.
Korey Jones (Allen, Texas) then inbounded the ball to Campbell, who caught it at his own free throw line and threw it the length of the court. It banked in off the glass to give Jones the lead at the break.
Jabari Bowman's (Warren Central) layup with 19:12 remaining gave Jones the lead for good at 30-29. A
Reggie Gause Jr. 3-pointer (Folsom, Louisiana) with 4:24 left gave the Bobcats its largest lead at 61-49.
Hinds came back to within 67-64 with six seconds left on a pair of Johnson free throws.
But Campbell sealed the win with two free throws of his own with four seconds to play.
Bowman led the team with eight rebounds and Thompson had six assists.
Jones shot 46 percent from the field (26-of-57) and 47 percent from 3-point range. Hinds was 22-of-66 from the field (33 percent) and 4-of-16 from 3-point range (25 percent).
The Bobcats were only 10-of-21 from the free throw line (48 percent) with Hinds making 16-of-23 foul shots (70 percent).
Hinds outrebounded Jones, 47-38, and had a 15-3 advantage on second half points.
