Defense leads No. 3 Bobcats past Meridian, 75-40

ELLISVILLE – No. 3 Jones College forced 30 turnovers and limited Meridian to 26 percent shooting as they rolled to a 75-40 victory here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
It was the 36th consecutive home victory for the Bobcats dating back to Nov. 29, 2017.

It was the MACCC opener for both teams. The Bobcats are now 4-0 overall, while the Eagles drop to 3-5.
 
Jones used a very balanced offensive attack, led by JaKayla Johnson's (Clinton) 14 points. Olivia Knight (Pearl) and Arianna Patton (Meridian) each had nine points and Jordan Clark (South Jones), Zoey Cooley (Laurel) and Sakyia White (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) added eight points each.
 
Nakyah Jones (Mobile, Alabama) pulled down 12 rebounds and had four blocked shots with White adding six boards. Knight had seven assists and two steals and Johnson had five steals and four assists.
 
Callie Cowan led the Eagles with 15 points. Amberly Brown had nine rebounds for MCC.
 
The Bobcats, who never trailed, jumped out to a 15-2 lead and led 17-6 after the first quarter, limiting the Eagles to only one field goal in the opening period. Jones led 42-17 at halftime and 61-23 after three quarters.
 
Jones took its longest lead at 70-25 on a layup by Kimaya Dixon (Lafayette) with 7:20 left in the game.
 
The Bobcats outscored Meridian 22-4 on fast break points, 44-26 on points in the paint and 31-4 on bench points.
 
Jones made 29-of-66 shots for 44 percent, 3-of-19 from 3-point range for 16 percent and 14-of-19 free throws for 74 percent. MCC was 16-of-62 from the floor for 26 percent, 2-of-12 from 3-point range for 17 percent and 6-of-22 from the foul line for 27 percent.
 
The Bobcats outrebounded MCC 51-40, but Jones turned the ball over 27 times
 
Jones resumes conference play with a 6 p.m. game on Monday at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
 
Meridian hosts Mississippi Delta on Monday.
