Sakyia White was a dominant presence all evening for No. 9 Jones College.
White, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward transfer from the University of North Alabama, scored 23 points and pulled down 22 rebounds to lead the Bobcats to a 60-48 victory over Arkansas State University Mid-South here Tuesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It was the 37th consecutive home win for Jones. The Bobcats are now 7-1 on the season. ASU Mid-South, ranked No. 12 in NJCAA Division II, falls to 7-7.
The Lady Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Jones rallied with a pair of layups by
Meloney Thames (Choctaw Central) in the final minute of the opening period to take a 14-13 advantage after the opening quarter.
White's jumper at 1:17 of the second quarter gave Jones its longest lead of the opening half at 26-17. The Bobcats led 26-19 at halftime.
A
Mackenzie Thomas (Laurel) layup gave Jones at 41-26 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats led 44-31 after three quarters.
Another Thomas layup with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter gave Jones its largest lead of the game at 48-31. Two free throws by Meleanna Williams got ASU Mid-South within 52-44 with 2:40 remaining, but that was as close as the visitors would get.
Thames finished the game with 11 points and five steals. Thomas had 10 rebounds and nine points.
Olivia Knight topped Jones with five assists.
Williams led the Lady Greyhounds with 13 points and Keiana Delaney added 12.
The Bobcats outrebounded ASU Mid-South 54-39 and forced 20 turnovers, while committing 15. Jones outscored the Lady Greyhounds 42-26 on points in the paint and 26-8 on points off turnovers.
Jones was 23-of-72 from the floor for 32 percent, but went 0-for-17 from 3-point range. The Bobcats were 14-of-18 from the foul line for 78 percent
ASU Mid-South made 18-of-57 shots for 32 percent, 3-of-13 from beyond the arc for 23 percent and 9-of-16 from the free throw line for 56 percent.
The Bobcats return to the court with a 1 p.m. game on Dec. 31 at home vs. No. 11 Tyler Junior College (Texas).
