Fourth quarter keys No. 8 Jones past Pearl River, 65-57

ELLISVILLE – A 12-1 run to start the fourth quarter lifted No. 8 Jones College past Pearl River 65-57 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
The Wildcats led 44-41 entering the final quarter, but back-to-back baskets by Endia Holliday (South Jones) and Jakayla Johnson (Clinton) gave Jones the lead for good at 45-44 with 8:23 to play. A Lekera Hughes (Oak Grove) layup at 5:26 ended the run and put the Bobcats up 53-45.
 
Daisha Bradford's (Mobile, Alabama) layup gave the Bobcats its largest lead at 61-52 with 2:29 to play.
 
Pearl River led 10-3 early in the game, but Jones came back to lead 14-13 after the first quarter. The Bobcats were up 29-28 at halftime.
 
Johnson paced Jones with 16 points, Holliday added 13 and Hughes finished with 10. Holliday had eight rebounds and Johnson added seven. Bradford topped the team with six assists and Johnson had five steals.
 
PRCC's Otashae Burrage led all scorers with 20 points.
 
The Bobcats were 22-of-60 from the floor for 37 percent, but struggled from beyond the 3-point line, making only 3-of-21 shots for 14 percent.
 
Pearl River was 17-of-46 from the field for 37 percent and 6-of-16 from 3-point range for 38 percent. 
 
Both teams struggled from the free throw line. Jones was 18-of-33 for 55 percent and PRCC was 17-of-29 for 59 percent.
 
The Wildcats outrebounded Jones, 44-38. 
 
Turnovers were critical as PRCC turned it over 26 times, compared to only 10 for Jones. The Bobcats outscored the Wildcats 27-8 in points off turnovers. Jones also held a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 12-0 edge in fast break points.
 
Jones, 2-0, will visit East Central for a 6 p.m. game on Monday.
 
Pearl River, 1-1, hosts Meridian on Monday.
