Ausbern, Nix Pitch Gems to Help Jones Sweep Baton Rouge

ELLISVILLE – Coleton Ausbern tossed a seven-inning complete-game in the opener and Andrew Nix threw six shutout innings in relief in game two to help Jones sweep Baton Rouge, 11-1 and 4-3, Wednesday at Community Bank Park.

Jones swept its first doubleheader of the year to improve to 6-11, while BRCC fell to 14-17.

The Bobcats will entertain No. 8 Northwest Mississippi (14-1) on Saturday, March 14 at The Bank to open conference play. First pitch is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

Jones 11, Baton Rouge 1 (7 inn.)

After giving up an RBI-single in the first, Ausbern allowed just four hits over the final six frames and Basiel Williams Jr. helped fuel a 12-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three RBIs in a run-rule victory.

Williams' RBI-single tied the game at 1-1 in the third and Gabe Lacy followed with a sac fly to give JC its first lead.

The Bobcats busted the game wide open with a six-run sixth, aided by three Bear errors. Kirkland Trahan delivered a two-out, two-run single.

Jones then walked it off in the seventh, using a leadoff error, two hit-by-pitches and a wild pitch to score O'Neill Burgos for the winning run.

Williams, Bailee Hendon, Trahan and Tyler Ducksworth all finished with multiple hits.

Ausbern (2-2) scattered six hits, five strikeouts and an earned run over seven innings.

Jones 4, Baton Rouge 3

BRCC jumped on top 3-1 after one inning but couldn't muster anything else after Nix entered, as JC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off the Bears.

Two wild pitches, a passed ball and an error at the plate allowed BRCC to score three in its opening at-bat.

Lacy's RBI-single scored Williams and pulled JC within 3-1 after an inning of play. But the Bobcats were held in check until their final at-bat of the game.

Nix kept JC in striking distance by hanging six zeroes and Jones found magic at The Bank in the end.

Ducksworth was plunked to start the inning, and three batters later, Lacy delivered a two-run double down the leftfield line to tie the game. After a pair of intentional walks, Blake Johnson smacked a single through the left side to score Lacy for the 4-3 win.

Seven different Bobcats recorded a hit and Nix picked up his first collegiate win.
