Bobcats post huge division road win over Bulldogs

PERKINSTON – The Jones College men's basketball team posted a huge win here Monday night at the Weathers-Wentzell Center.
The Bobcats knocked down 13 3-point shots, built up a 28-point lead early in the second half and held on to defeat Mississippi Gulf Coast, 85-75. With the win, Jones sweeps the season series over MGCCC.
The Bobcats are now 17-5 overall and are tied for first place in the MACJC South Division with Pearl River at 11-2. Jones can clinch a tie for the division championship and the top seed in the division for the MACJC Tournament with a victory at home vs. Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.
Jones will serve as host for the MACJC Tournament Feb. 25-28. A tournament bracket will be released on Friday.
MGCCC travels to Hinds on Thursday.
Jones fell behind early 8-3, but they would take control with an 18-1 run.
A David Gaines Jr. (Wayne County) basket at 11:20 of the first half ended the run and gave the Bobcats a 21-9 lead. Another Gaines' basket at 6:26 gave Jones a 32-19 lead. 
After a Bulldog field goal, Jones scored seven straight points and took its longest lead of the half at 39-21 when Zachariah Malone (Shady Grove, Louisiana) scored with 3:33 left.
The Bobcats led 44-27 at halftime.
Jones opened the second half on a 20-9 run, capped by a Kenneth Rogers (Starkville) 3-pointer, and took its longest lead at 64-36 with 14:53 remaining. A Winceton Edwards' (Oak Grove) 3-pointer had the Bobcats up 72-45 with 11:56 left.
But the Bulldogs would go on a 16-2 run and cut the lead to 74-61 with 8:14 left on a tip in by Dajuan Moorer. Jones would regroup and extend the lead out to 85-67 with 2:22 left on a 3-pointer by Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana).
Rogers led the Bobcats with 18 points, followed by Alexander with 17, Edwards with 12 and Tirus Smith (Petal) with 11. Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) had 11 assists and David McCoy (Meridian) had five assists for Jones. Alexander had six rebounds.
Moorer had 23 points for the Bulldogs and Willie Logan had 22. Keevon Oney added 10.
The Bobcats were 33-of-60 from the floor – 13-of-29 from 3-point range – for 55 percent. Rogers had five 3-pointers, Edwards had four, Alexander had three and Williams had one.
MGCCC was 29-of-54 from the field (6-of-15 from 3-point range) for 54 percent.
Jones was 6-of-11 from the free throw line and the Bulldogs were 11-of-14.
Mississippi Gulf Coast falls to 18-4 overall,10-3 in the division.
