SUMMIT – The Jones College Bobcats used an 11-1 run to start overtime and went on to defeat Southwest Mississippi Community, 86-78, here Tuesday night at Horace Holmes Gymnasium.
It was the second straight overtime win for Jones. Last week, the Bobcats downed East Central 71-69 in overtime. Jones is now 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the division.
Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) scored 10 points in the extra session as the Bobcats prevailed.
Alexander's 3-point play to start overtime gave Jones the lead for good at 71-68.
After a Southwest free throw, Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored on a drive to the goal, Alexander followed with another basket, Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) hit a pair of free throws and David Gaines Jr. (Wayne County) scored on a dunk after a steal with David McCoy (Meridian) getting the assist to cap an 8-0 run and give Jones a 79-69 lead with 2:44 to play.
The closest Southwest would get would be 81-74 with 1:30 remaining when Robert Boyd hit a 3-pointer.
Jones appeared to be in control in regulation.
A Williams' basket with 8:26 remaining gave the Bobcats a 64-46 lead. But Southwest stormed back and tied the game at 68-68 with 1:12 left on two Damian Dear free throws.
The Bobcats had ball possession after a timeout with 27.1 seconds to play, but turned the ball over. Southwest would throw the ball way with 8.6 seconds remaining.
Williams would take a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was no good to force the extra period.
In the first half, the Bears took a 26-19 lead with 6:07 on the clock when Robert Kendrick scored. But Jones roared back and went up 37-28 with 2:05 showing on an Edwards' basket.
The Bobcats led 40-33 at halftime and continued that momentum in the second half.
McCoy's 3-pointer with 14:33 left in regulation gave Jones its largest lead of the night at 56-37 – a 37-11 run going back to the first half.
Alexander had 22 points, Edwards had 20 and Tirus Smith (Petal) scored 12 to lead the Bobcats. Alexander had eight rebounds and Smith finished with seven. Williams had eight assists.
Dear had 24 points for Southwest. Boyd and Kendrick added 14 points each and Arturro Bingham had 12.
Jones was 33-of-76 from the field (11-of-32 from 3-point range) for 43 percent. Jones was 7-of-13 from the free throw line for 54 percent.
The Bears were 27-of-52 from the floor (13-of-23 from 3-point range) for 52 percent. They were 13-of-23 from the free throw line for 57 percent.
The Bobcats outrebounded Southwest, 36-33.
The Bears fall to 10-4 overall, 2-3 in division play.
