ELLISVILLE – Mississippi Gulf Coast outscored Jones County Junior Colege 35-14 over the final 13:06 and defeated the Bobcats, 71-63, here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
JCJC falls to 11-10 overall, 6-6 in division play.
The Bobcats led for the game's first 32:43, but could not hold on down the stretch.
Quentin Pough (Wayne County) hit a pair of 3-pointers and
Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored as JCJC jumped out to an 8-0 lead just over a minute into the game.
An Edwards' 3-pointer put Jones up 18-5 with 9:24 left in the first half. After MGCCC cut the lead to 18-13, the Bobcats would go ahead 33-23 with 1:33 showing when
Malik Henry (Terry) scored.
JCJC led 36-27 at halftime.
The Bobcats continued to play well early in the second half and matched their longest lead when
Michael Williams (Rayville, Louisiana) scored off an assist by Henry at 13:20 to make it 49-36.
But the Bulldogs would come back.
Dedoch Chan's two free throws with 7:13 left gave MGCCC its first lead of the night at 53-52. Henry answered at 6:51 to put the Bobcats up 54-53, but that would be JCJC's final lead.
A Chan 3-point play put the Bulldogs up 62-58 with 3:56 remaining and MGCCC took its longest lead at 68-58 with 1:42 to play when LaRaymond Spivery made a free throw.
Edwards hit a 3-pointer at 1:29 and
Shemar Johnson (New Hope) scored at 1:17 to make it 68-63, but the Bobcats would not score again.
Edwards led Jones with 19 points and
Mason Daniels (Atlanta, Georgia) added 15.
Chan had 14 for the Bulldogs, 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the division. Dajuan Moorer added 15 and Spivery had 12.
With one week left in the regular season, Copiah-Lincoln tops the South Division at 9-3 with MGCCC and Pearl River tied for second. JCJC and Southwest are tied for fourth.
Jones travels to East Central on Monday and will end regular season play at home on Feb. 22 against Meridian.
MGCCC hosts Pearl River on Monday.
The MACJC Tournament begins Feb. 26 at Northwest in Senatobia.
