PERKINSTON – Jones County Junior College outscored Mississippi Gulf Coast 21-12 over the final 7:51 and beat the Bulldogs 67-59 here Monday night in the Weathers-Wentzell Center.
It was a defensive battle for the most part and the Bobcats came out on top.
MGCCC led 47-46 when
Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) hit a 3-pointer from deep in the right corner as the shot clock expired to put the Bobcats ahead for good. He followed that up with a drive to the goal to give Jones a 51-47 lead with 7:26 to play.
The Bobcats continued to expand the lead and went ahead 61-51 with 3:44 remaining when Edwards made two free throws.
MGCCC would never get closer than the final margin.
JCJC started the game off in fine fashion, taking an 11-4 lead on an Edwards' layup with 15:04 showing. The Bobcats took a 20-10 advantage with 11:23 on the clock when
Quentin Pough (Wayne County) scored.
But the Bulldogs would come back and take a 24-22 lead with 5:40 showing when Keevon Oney made a free throw. MGCCC led 34-31 at halftime.
Malik Henry (Terry) scored the first six points of the second half to give JCJC a 37-34 lead with 18:13 to play.
DaJuan Moorer's field goal with 8:54 remaining gave the Bulldogs its final lead of the night at 47-46.
Edwards topped the Bobcats with 23 points. Henry added 13 and
Mason Daniels (Atlanta, Georgia) finished with 11.
Omar Steele (Laurel) led the Bobcats with 7 rebounds.
David McCoy (Meridian),
Michael Williams (Rayville, Louisiana) and Daniels each had 3 assists. McCoy had 4 steals.
The Bobcats were 24-of-55 from the field (5-of-25 from 3-point range) for 44 percent. Jones was 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
JCJC is now 8-6 overall, 3-2 in the MACJC South Division.
LaRaymond Spivery led the Bulldogs with 16 points and Dedoch Chan added 10.
The Bulldogs were 23-of-55 from the floor (0-of-13 from 3-point range) for 42 percent. MGCCC was 13-of-24 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs outrebounded Jones, 37-29.
MGCCC falls to 6-5 overall, 2-3 in the division.
The Bobcats will host East Central at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at A.B. Howard Gymnasium. The contest will air on
