ELLISVILLE – Coach
Missy Bilderback's No. 8 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats took the lead for good early in the second quarter and went to defeat previously undefeated Hinds, 84-67, here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The JCJC women are now 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC South Division. JCJC's only two losses have been to top-ranked Shelton State (Alabama).
Alexis Tolefree (Conway, Arkansas) scored 22 points and
Kira Bonner (Quitman) had 19 as JCJC grabbed a big division win.
The Lady Bobcats led 7-2 early, but Hinds rallied to take a 16-10 lead when Olivia Jordan scored with 2:51 left in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs would lead 21-20 after the first quarter.
Jones took the lead for good when
Mackenzie Thompson (East Rankin Academy) hit a 3-pointer with 4:55 left in the first half to make it 30-29.
ZaKyia Weathersby's (Collins) putback at 1:22 gave Jones its longest lead of the first half at 44-33 and the Lady Bobcats led 44-34 at halftime.
Bonner's 3-pointer at the 4:05 mark of the third quarter put JCJC ahead 57-42. The Lady Bobcats led 59-48 after three quarters and Hinds would never get closer than that in the final quarter.
JCJC's biggest lead would be 21 points on two occasions – the final one being at 82-61 with 2:22 to play when Bonner made two free throws.
Chrystal Ezechukwu (Stone Mountain, Georgia) added 12 points for JCJC and
Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) finished with 11.
Victoria Johnson had 22 points for Hinds, 10-1 overall and 1-1 in the division. Kirdis Clark added 11 points and Jordan had 10.
The Bobcats return home for a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Pearl River. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
Hinds hosts Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday.
