No. 8 Bobcats overwhelm Rangers to reach MACJC Tournament semifinals

ELLISVILE – When Bruce Stevens (Bay Springs) makes 3-point shots, it's almost unfair for the opposition.
Stevens, the 6-foot-8, 257-pound sophomore forward, made three 3-pointers in the game's first 7:05 with the last one giving No. 8 Jones County Junior College the lead for good as they went on to route Northwest 107-80 here Tuesday night in the MACJC Tournament.
The Bobcats, 23-1 and winners of 11 straight games, will meet Holmes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the tournament semifinals. Holmes got a layup with 1.8 seconds left to beat Mississippi Gulf Coast, 84-83.
In earlier games, defending state champion Southwest whipped Itawamba 82-55 and Northeast downed East Central, 86-69. Southwest will meet Northeast at 3 p.m. in the other semifinal game.
In women's semifinal contests, Copiah-Lincoln faces Southwest at 1 p.m. and No. 14 Jones County plays Hinds at 5:30 p.m.
The women's championship game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, followed by the men's title game at 7:30 p.m.
JCJC.TV will air all games involving JCJC in the tournament, as well as the Co-Lin vs. Southwest women's game. NEMCCTV.com will air the Northeast vs. Southwest game.
Bobcats 107, Rangers 80
Northwest led 17-12 when Therrell Gosier II scored with 14:05 left in the first half.
But Stevens hit back-to-back 3- pointers to give Jones an 18-17 lead with 12:55 showing. Rickey Holden (Laurel) would convert a 3-point play at 9:48 to cap a 13-0 run and give the Bobcats a 25-17 lead.
Stevens would hit his fourth 3-pointer and give JCJC its biggest lead of the first half at 40-24 with 6:53 left. The Bobcats led 44-31 at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half.
Andre Tieu (Jackson Provine) hit a 3-pointer with 16:52 left giving the Bobcats a 62-40 lead. A David Davis (Purvis) layup made it 79-47 with 10:54 remaining.
Maurice Dunlap (Amanda Elzy) hit one of his six 3-pointers with 8:26 left to give the Bobcats an 89-53 lead.
The Rangers scored 10 straight and got within 89-63 with 6:30 left, but the Bobcats would go on a 16-5 run and took their longest lead of the game at 105-68 with 2:14 left on an Enrique Milton (Jackson Provine) 3-pointer.
Stevens finished the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds – his 17th 'double-double' of the season. He was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Dunlap also had 24 points and was 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
Davis had 12 points, while Holden and Xavier Howard (Pearl) had 11 points each.
Tristin Walley (Hattiesburg) had 8 rebounds and Howard had 7. Holden had 8 assists and Milton finished with 7. Stevens led the team with 3 steals.
Dante Sterling had 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Rangers. Keelin Jackson and Gosier had 11 points each.
The Bobcats were 38-of-81 from the floor for 47 percent. Jones was 15-of-42 from 3-point range for 36 percent. The Bobcats were 16-of-18 from the free throw line for 89 percent.
Northwest was 25-of-68 from the field for 37 percent, but only 6-of-32 from 3-point range for 19 percent. They were 24-of-34 from the free throw line for 71 percent.
JCJC outrebounded the Rangers, 47-45. The Bobcats committed 15 turnovers, compared to 22 for Northwest. JCJC had 22 assists, while the Rangers had 15.
Northwest ends the season at 14-9.
