No. 16 Lady Bobcats advance to MACJC Tournament semifinals

ELLISVILLE – A mid-second quarter surge sparked the No. 16 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats to a 70-50 win over Holmes in the first round of the MACJC Tournament here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Lady Bobcats, 23-1, have now won 18 straight games.
JCJC will play Hinds at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the tournament semifinals. Hinds rallied to defeat Northeast 78-67 in overtime.
In Monday's other games, Southwest beat Itawamba 60-52 and Copiah-Lincoln edged East Mississippi, 60-59. Southwest will play Co-Lin at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the other semifinal game.
All four South Division teams won on opening night.
The championship game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lady Bobcats have also qualified for the Region 23 Tournament at Mississippi College and will play its first round game there on March 7.
There were be four men's games on Tuesday in the state tournament with Southwest meeting Itawamba at 1 p.m., followed Northeast vs. East Central at 3 p.m. Holmes plays Mississippi Gulf Coast at 5:30 p.m. and 8th-rated JCJC plays Northwest at 7:30 p.m.

Vaquela Pimpton's free throw with 2:28 left in the first quarter gave Holmes a 12-11 lead.
But JCJC scored the last eight points of the quarter, including two free throws by K.K. Tassin (Terry) with 1 second showing, to take a 19-12 lead at the end of the first period.
Alexis Tolefree (Conway, Arkansas) hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and cap the 10- 0 run, giving JCJC a 22-12 lead. Holmes then scored seven straight points and cut the lead to 22-19 with 6:18 left in the first half when Aneisha Evans scored.
The Lady Bobcats went on a 12-2 run and went ahead 34-21 with 1:32 left when Tolefree made another 3-pointer.
JCJC would take its longest lead at 50-25 midway through the third quarter, but Holmes trimmed the margin to 51-36 after three quarters.
JCJC took a 61-43 lead with 4:53 left when Tassin made two free throws. Holmes pulled within 63-50 with 2:14 to play on two Pimpton free throws.
But the Lady Bobcats would score the final seven points of the game.
Tolefree led JCJC with 17 points, followed by Tatyana Lofton (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) with 15, Myyah West (Prentiss) with 12 and Tassin with 10.
West had 15 rebounds and Juliet Esadah (Warri, Nigeria) had 11. Lofton finished with 6 assists and 3 steals.
Pimpton topped the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.
JCJC was 24-of-67 from the field, including 7-of-26 from 3-point range, for 36 percent. The Lady Bobcats were 15-of-22 from the free throw line.
Holmes was 15-of-62 from the floor, including 4-of-17 from 3-point range, for 24 percent. The Lady Bulldogs were 16-of-23 from the free throw line.
JCJC outrebounded Holmes, 54-40. Holmes committed 22 turnovers, compared to 21 for JCJC.
