Undefeated Shelton State downs Bobcats, 80-70

ELLISVILLE – Unbeaten Shelton State (Alabama) used a 16-0 run in the first half and went on to defeat JCJC 80-70 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bobcats got off to a good start and took an 18-14 lead with 12:14 left in the first half when Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored. A Malik Henry (Terry) basket at 9:57 gave the Bobcats a 25-21 lead.
But the Bucs, who received votes in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll, would then score 16 straight points with Charles Norman's basket at 5:55 ending the run to make it 37-25. Shelton State took its longest lead of the game at 46-28 with 2:47 left in the half when Jamani Glover made a 3-pointer.
However, JCJC scored the final eight points of the half to cut the lead to 46-36 at intermission.
The Bobcats continued the momentum to start the second half.  Henry made two free throws and Mason Daniels (Atlanta, Georgia) made a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 46-41.
But Shelton State would stretch the lead back to 61-49 with 10:28 remaining when Austin Hardy scored.
JCJC rallied and got within 70-65 with 4:15 to play when Omar Steele (Laurel) made a free throw. But the Bobcats would get no closer.
Daniels scored a game-high 22 points for the Bobcats, 2-3. Henry added 15, while Edwards and Michael Williams had 9 points each. The Bobcats were 18-of-23 from the free throw line.
Tre Todd paced Shelton State, 8-0, with 17 points. Tra-Quan Knight added 13, Matthew Horton had 12 and Glover finished with 11.
The Bobcats will open MACJC South Division play at 8 p.m. Monday at Copiah-Lincoln. Co-Lin deafeated Coahoma 93-63 on Thursday to improve to 7-0.
Shelton State travels to Chattahoochee Valley Community College (Alabama) on Monday.
