ELLISVILLE – The 11
th-rated Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats had their chances vs. No. 5 Tyler Junior College (Texas).
But the Apaches broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in the final 34 minutes and defeated JCJC 4-1 here Friday night at Bobcat Soccer Field.
The Lady Bobcats had a chance to break out on top in the 31
st minute of the game, but
Mary Kate Smith's (South Jones) penalty kick was saved by Tyler goalkeeper Christina Hendershot.
The Apaches broke the scoring ice when Claire Ramet scored at 41:21.
JCJC tied the game at 1-1 when Smith scored at 54:13.
But Tyler answered quickly, as Riley MacLeod scored at 55:58.
The Apaches kept the pressure on and added a pair of late goals. O'Shay Nelson scored at 77:35 from about 20 yards away and Sanja Ratkovic ended the scoring when she kicked the ball into the net off a corner kick by Kie Asai at 86:40.
The Apaches were credited with 13 shots on goal, while JCJC had five. The Lady Bobcats had five corner kicks and Tyler had four.
Mia Holmes (Brandon) played the first half in goal for JCJC and had two saves, while
Brittney Snyder (Biloxi) played the second half and had five saves.
Hendershot was in goal the entire game and had four saves for Tyler.
JCJC falls to 6-1 on the year, while the Apaches are now 6-1-1. Tyler, a perennial power in junior college soccer, has 12 foreign athletes on its roster.
The Lady Bobcats will visit Itawamba for a 2 p.m. match on Wednesday and will host East Central at 5 p.m. on Sept. 30.
Tyler plays at Pearl River on Saturday and hosts nationally ranked Navarro College (Texas) on Wednesday.
