ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats scored the first 31 points of the second quarter and went on to crush Coahoma, 116-68, here Monday evening at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
That was part of a 42-3 run by the Lady Bobcats.
The Lady Bobcats, 7-1, will not play again until they travel to Walters State (Tennessee) at 3 p.m. on Jan. 3 and Roane State (Tennessee) at 3 p.m. on Jan. 4. Coahoma does not play again until Jan. 9 at Copiah-Lincoln.
Monday's game was close throughout the first quarter.
Coahoma took its final lead of the game at 16-15 with 2:07 left in the first quarter when Tomaja Shaw hit a 3-pointer. JCJC took a 26-18 lead when
Juliet Esadah (Warri, Nigeria) scored on a layup at the buzzer to end the opening period.
The Lady Bobcats then overwhelmed the Lady Tigers defensively in the second quarter, limiting Coahoma to only one field goal.
Esadah's two free throws at 3:37 capped a 33-0 run and gave JCJC a 57-18 lead. The Lady Bobcats led 61-26 at halftime.
JCJC scored the first six points of the third quarter and went ahead 67-26 when
Tatyana Lofton (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) scored with 8:46 showing. The Lady Bobcats took its longest lead of the third quarter when
Kira Bonner (Quitman) scored to make it 91-45 with 1:38 left.
The Lady Bobcats' biggest lead of the game was at 114-60 with 3:25 remaining when
Madison Bishop (Christian Collegiate, Gulfport) hit a 3-pointer.
JCJC placed four players in double figures, led by Lofton with 24 points.
Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) had 23, Esadah had 18 and Bonner finished with 11.
Esadah had 9 rebounds, while
Zan Ratcliffe (West Jones) had 9 assists and
K.K. Tassin (Terry) added 7 assists.
Show led Coahoma, 1-9, with 15 points. Tya Edwards and Kayla Rogers added 12 each.
The Lady Bobcats were 47-of-86 from the floor (11-of-26 from 3-point range) for 55 percent. JCJC was 11-of-16 from the free throw line.
Coahoma was 20-of-53 from the field (9-of-22 from 3-point range) for 38 percent. The Lady Tigers were 19-of-32 from the foul line.
JCJC outrebounded Coahoma, 49-34. The Lady Bobcats committed 27 turnovers and Coahoma was charged with 34.
