ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats ended the 2016 season on a successful note.
JCJC whipped Mississippi Gulf Coast 28-14 here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
Freshman running back
Scott Phillips (South Jones) rushed for 165 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries, while freshman quarterback
Detric Hawthorn (Collins) carried 17 times for 114 yards and two scores.
Phillips ends the season with 1,112 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
Defensively, JCJC recorded 12 sacks, giving them a state's best 64 sacks on the season.
Ramon Patton (Pascagoula) had 12 tackles, including 10 solos, while end
Marques Ford (Riverview, Florida) had 4 1/2 sacks. End
Markel Winters (Tallahassee, Florida) had 3 1/2 sacks.
Travis Reed (Meridian) had six tackles and a pass interception.
Linebacker
Cannon Gibbs (Northwest Rankin) had 9 tackles, while efensive backs
Tyrek Moody (Petal) and
Javien Hamilton (Bay Springs) each had 7 tackles, while linebacker
C.J. Johnson (Petal) and tackle
De'Shondrick Foxworth (East Marion) each had six tackles.
First-year head coach
Steve Buckley's Bobcats end the year at 6-3 overall, 3-3 in the MACJC South Division. Jones was only 2-7 in 2015.
MGCCC is 5-4 overall and 4-2 in division play. The Bulldogs will qualify for the state playoffs with an East Central win over Southwest or a Copiah-Lincoln loss to Pearl River on Saturday.
JCJC started the game by driving from its own 31-yard line to the MGCCC 13 in six plays. But on a third and 8, a high snap got away from Hawthorn and Jaylen Dailey recovered for the Bulldogs at the 22.
But the Bobcats would score on its next possession, driving 80 yards in eight plays. Phillips scored on a 12-yard run and
Brady Farlow (Purvis) added the conversion to give JCJC a 7-0 lead with 7:00 left in the first quarter. Phillips had a 32-yard run in the drive.
Two possessions later, the Bulldogs started a drive at the JCJC 35 after the Bobcats were called for interference on a fair catch on a punt.
MGCCC tried a fake field goal on fourth and 13 at the Bobcat 20, but the pass fell incomplete and the Bobcats took over.
The Bulldogs would tie the game when they drove 75 yards in just four plays. T'Rod Daniels scored on a 27-yard run and Joshua Rowland's extra point made it 7-7 with 6:23 left in the first half.
But Jones responded with a 51-yard, 10-play drive to take the lead for good. Rowland booted a 45-yard field goal at the 1:47 mark of the first half and the Bobcats led 10-7.
The JCJC defense set up the next score when they recovered a fumble and took over at the MGCCC 12.
Hawthorn took it into the end zone on the next play and Farlow's extra point gave JCJC a 17-7 lead with 8:41 remaining in the third quarter.
MGCCC would take the ensuing kickoff and drive from its own 27 to the Bobcat 25 in eight plays. But Rowland's 42-yard field goal attempt was no good and JCJC maintained a 10-point lead.
JCJC would then move from its own 25 to the Bulldog 20 in six plays. Farlow's 37-yard field goal gave the Bobcats a 20-7 lead with 4:07 left in the third quarter.
The Bobcats would then march 86 yards in 10 plays on its next drive. Hawthorn would score on a 6-yard run. He then hit
Logan Scott (Oak Grove) for a two-point conversion and JCJC led 28-7 with 12:22 left in the game. The big play in the drive was a 48-yard run by Phillips.
MGCCC got a late score with a 91-yard, 15-play drive. Quarterback Larry Sisson found Brandon Martin with a 15-yard touchdown pass on a fourth and 1 play. Rowland's conversion ended the scoring with 33 seconds left in the game.
