PERKINSTON – The streak is over.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs outscored 8
th-ranked Jones County Junior College 21-6 over the final 7:05 of play and defeated the Bobcats 81-65 here Thursday night before a packed Weathers-Wentzell Center.
It was the first loss of the season for the defending national champion Bobcats and ends a 22-game JCJC winning streak. The Bobcats are now 14-1 overall, but still lead the MACJC South Division at 7-1.
Miss. Gulf Coast held the upper hand for most of the game.
JCJC pulled within 60-59 with 7:05 remaining to play on a spinning move to the goal by
Bryce Jones.
But the Bulldogs then put the game away with a 13-0 run. Deshawn Jones' two free throws gave MGCCC a 73-59 lead with just 2:31 left.
Christopher White's putback at 2:10 made it 73-61, but the Bobcats would get not closer.
MGCCC scored the game's first four points and would take a 25-19 lead with 8:08 left in the opening half when Deshawn Jones made a pair of free throws.
The Bobcats battled back and took its only lead of the first half at 32-31 with 2:51 showing when White made a 5-footer. MGCCC would come back and take a 37-34 halftime lead.
JCJC scored the first two buckets of the second half and went ahead 38-37 with 19:06 left when
Marquis Cunningham scored on a reverse layup. The Bobcats would take its longest lead of the game at 45-41 with 15:23 left when
Albert Goss scored on a tip-in.
The Bulldogs then went on a 15-1 run and took a 56-46 lead with 10:42 remaining when Justin Coleman scored on a 10-footer. JCJC then outscored MGCCC 13-4 and cut the lead to 60-59 with just over seven minutes to play, but the Bulldogs would control the game from that point.
Bryce Jones paced the Bobcats with 18 points, while
Otis Harvey added 14.
Justin Coleman had 20 for the Bulldogs, 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the division, while Deshawn Jones added 19, Anfernee Hampton had 14 and Jamarri Johnson had 11.
The Bobcats will host East Central on Monday in A.B. Howard Gymnasium with the women's game starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Both games will air on
www.jcjc.tv.
MGCCC travels to Meridian on Monday.
