ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats used a smothering, defensive effort to post its first win of the season here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The defending MACJC champion Lady Bobcats held Alabama Southern without a field goal for almost 11 ½ minutes of the first half and cruised to a 98-54 decision over ASCC
The Lady Bobcats were down 4-2 early, but came back to take a 20-9 lead with 13:19 left in the first half on a
Terrica Williams' basket. ASCC's Lakeisha Pickens then hit a 3-pointer with 12:11 showing to make it 20-12.
JCJC then took complete command, scoring 21 straight points.
Starla Daggans' basket with 6:33 remaining in the first half made it 41-12.
The Lady Bobcats made it 55-17 with 1:11 left when
Kadie Parker scored. ASCC's Detoria Parker then scored with 43 seconds showing to make it 55-19. That was ASCC's first field goal since the Pickens' 3-pointer.
It was more of the same in the second half.
The Lady Bobcats took a 77-37 lead with 10:13 left on a Parker basket. JCJC's longest lead was 90-39 with 4:51 remaining on a free throw by
Mallory Odom.
Williams paced JCJC, 1-1, with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Parker added 13 points and Daggans had 12 points. Daggans and
Taylor Baudoin each had 5 assists.
Jasmine McCants had 14 points and Lakeyia Dejarnette added 12 for Alabama Southern, 1-4.
The Lady Bobcats were 39-of-78 from the floor, including 3-of-14 from 3-point range, for 50 percent. JCJC was only 17-of-37 from the free throw line.
ASCC was just 16-of-45 from the field, including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line, for 35.6 percent. The Lady Eagles were 18-of-33 from the free throw line.
JCJC outrebounded ASCC, 48-24.
JCJC will next be in action on Thursday when they travel to Itawamba for a 5 p.m. tilt. The Lady Bobcats head to New Orleans for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday vs. Delgado Community College (Louisiana).
Alabama Southern will play in the Albany Tech Tournament in Albany, Georgia, on Saturday/Sunday.
