PENSACOLA, Fla. – The third-ranked Jones College women's soccer team found the breakthrough in the final minute Sunday, defeating No. 4 Johnson County 1-0 on a 90th-minute goal.
The victory kept the Bobcats unbeaten at 4-0-1 on the season.
Jones controlled much of the attacking play throughout the match but entered halftime locked in a scoreless draw. The Bobcats outshot Johnson County (5-1) 7-2 in the opening 45 minutes while continuing to apply pressure to the Cavaliers' defense.
That pressure continued after the break as Jones registered 10 more shots in the second half, but the match remained scoreless deep into the closing minutes.
The Bobcats finally broke through at the 89:01 mark when Jameyah Hubbard (Tupelo) picked up a loose ball, out-muscled a defender, nutmegged another and found the back of the net to give Jones the 1-0 advantage.
The goal was the first allowed by Johnson County this season as the Bobcats saw out the final moments to secure the victory.
Jones finished with a 17-4 advantage in total shots and put six attempts on goal. Karla Ovalle (Panama City, Panama; Bolivar Commercial Institute) and Victoria Faure (Saint-Étienne, France; Tezenas du Montcel) led the Bobcats with four shots apiece, while Sofia Monico (Madison; Madison Central) added three. Hubbard finished with two shots, both on goal, including the match-winner.
Jennifer Huerzeler (Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland; BWZ Rapperswil) went the full 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves to earn the shutout.
