ELLISVILLE – Mississippi Gulf Coast played with an edge from the opening serve and handed No. 24 Jones College a 3-1 loss Wednesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (7-2) were the more consistent and aggressive side for much of the match, taking advantage of 28 Jones attack errors and controlling the back row with a 69-38 advantage in digs.
Jones (10-4) finished with more kills, blocks and total points, but Gulf Coast's ability to extend rallies and capitalize on Bobcat mistakes proved to be the difference.
Gulf Coast hit .296 in the opening set, putting down 11 kills against just three errors on 27 swings. Jones had 12 kills in the frame but committed seven attack errors and hit .179 as the Bulldogs grabbed the early advantage.
The Bobcats responded with their best offensive set of the match in the second. Jones totaled 16 kills and hit .278, committing six errors on 36 attempts, to even the match.
But the momentum did not carry over and Jones struggled offensively in the third set, finishing with eight kills and eight errors on 29 attacks.
Gulf Coast then produced its second-best offensive set of the night in the fourth, hitting .273 with 13 kills and four errors on 33 attempts. Jones countered with 11 kills but committed seven more attack errors and hit .133 as the Bulldogs closed out the match.
Despite the loss, Izzi Barnes delivered a solid offensive performance for Jones. Barnes had a team-high 14 kills with just one error on 21 attacks, hitting .619 for the match. She also contributed three total blocks and finished with a team-best 16 points.
Selah Sandridge added 10 kills, while Myah Favre finished with nine kills and three total blocks. Amaya Wilson contributed five kills and two blocks.
Claire Wicker led the Bobcats with 24 assists, while Addyson Sides added 16. Olivia Guth paced the Jones defense with 12 digs and also recorded an ace.
Lilly Rutland led Gulf Coast with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .349 and adding 12 digs. Mariah Hammond contributed nine kills, and Reese Sorrells had six.
Ella Bilbo directed the Bulldog offense with 26 assists and two aces, while Cambell Herrington anchored a Gulf Coast defense that consistently kept points alive. Herrington finished with a match-high 26 digs as the Bulldogs had three players reach double figures defensively.
The final numbers illustrated how close the match was offensively. Jones held advantages of 47-45 in kills, 6-5 in blocks, 43-41 in assists and 57-55 in total points. But the Bobcats committed nine more attack errors, 28-19, and Gulf Coast finished with a .205 hitting percentage compared with .154 for Jones.
The Bulldogs' 31-dig advantage was perhaps the biggest difference. Gulf Coast repeatedly turned Jones attacks into extended rallies and second opportunities, while the Bobcats were unable to establish the same defensive rhythm.
Jones will look to respond on Friday, hosting Meridian at 4 o'clock in the MACCC-opener.
