Bobcats fall to No. 14 Copiah-Lincoln, 31-20

WESSON – No. 14 Copiah-Lincoln never trailed and defeated Jones College, 31-20, here Thursday night at H.L. Stone Stadium.
 
The loss drops the Bobcats to 2-2 overall, 0-2 in the MACCC South Division. The Wolves are now 3-1 overall, 1-1 in division play. 
 
Each team ran 58 plays, but Co-Lin outrushed Jones, 160 yards to 36. The Bobcats had 248 yards passing, compared to Co-Lin's 137.
 
Co-Lin scored on its opening possession, marching 73 yards in nine plays. Martavious Boswell scored on a 7-yard run and Ty Jones' extra point made it 7-0 with 8:33 to play in the first quarter.
 
Jones answered quickly with a 75-yard, four-play drive. Jevarion Glover connected with Smith on a 45-yard strike and Christian Baglione's (Northwest Rankin) extra point made it 7-7 with 7:05 left in the opening period.
 
The Wolves took the lead for good when Doug Nelson recovered a Bobcat fumble and ran it back 47 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-7 with 8:45 left in the second quarter.
 
Co-Lin took the second half kickoff and went 58 yards in 10 plays. Quarterback Eli Viniard scored on a 3-yard run and Jones' PAT made it 21-7 with 9:52 to play in the third quarter.
 
The Wolves forced a three-and-out and took over at their own 23-yard line after a punt. 
 
Co-Lin then went 77 yards in seven plays with Dezmond Ray scoring on a 45-yard run. Jones' conversion made it 28-7 with 4:18 to play in the third quarter.
 
The Bobcats responded with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Glover to Roberts to cap a 52-yard, five-play drive. The extra point attempt failed and Jones trailed 28-13 with 1:51 left in the third quarter.
 
Jones forced a Co-Lin punt, but Nelson would then come up with his second turnover of the night, intercepting a pass at the Bobcat 38.
 
Eight plays later, Jones booted a 25-yard field goal and Co-Lin led 31-13 with 9:13 remaining in the fourth quarter.
 
The Bobcats then put together a 75-yard, 15-play drive. Glover passed to Gray for a 6-yard touchdown and Baglione's extra point ended the scoring with 3:33 showing on the clock.
 
Boswell led the Wolves with 103 yards on 20 carries. Viniard completed 11-of-19 passes for 137 yards.
 
Archie Chambers led Co-Lin with nine tackles. Nelson had eight tackles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception.

Bobcat quarterback Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) completed 23-of-29 passes for 248 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
 
TK Keyes (Taylorsville) had four catches for 54 yards, Kaiden Smith (Oak Grove) had two catches for 54 yards and a score, Zay Roberts (Pompano Beach, Fla.) had four receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown and JQ Gray (Oak Grove) had five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
 
Defensively, Tay James (Mendenhall) had six tackles, Jeremiah Tatum (Columbia), Dion Barber (Oak Grove) and Cortland Battee (Florence) each had five tackles.
 
Jones returns home for its final non-division game next week when they host Holmes for Homecoming on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
 
Co-Lin travels to Southwest on Sept. 25.
