No. 1 Jones opens MACCC play with sweep at East Central

DECATUR – Ava Prejean tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener, Breelyn Cain struck out 10 in the nightcap and four Bobcats homered in a doubleheader sweep Friday at East Central to open MACCC play.

No. 1 Jones pushed its winning streak out to 15 games in improving to 24-3. ECCC dropped to 10-6.

The Bobcats host No. 11 Northwest on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.

Jones 7, East Central 0

Prejean struck out six and allowed three hits in a third straight shutout for the Bobcats in the first game of the day.

Emily Mizelle's bases-loaded RBI-single in the top of the first scored Jones' first run.

Addy Shorter's second collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left-center in the third, pushed the Bobcat lead to 3-0 after three.

Laney Little hit a solo shot in the sixth, Mizelle a solo slam in the seventh and Marlee Dampeer and Claire Andersen added RBIs in the seventh.

Jones 7, East Central 4

Makynlie Jones broke open a scoreless game with a two-run homer in the fifth but Jones had to withstand a late ECCC threat in the seventh to earn the sweep.

Jones' homer was her seventh in six games, 14th of the year, and pushed her hit streak out to 16 games.

The Bobcats pushed their lead out to 7-1 in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double by Kaleigh Steverson, RBI-single by Little and sac fly by Dampeer.

But the Warriors wouldn't go away quietly in their final at-bat.

Sophia Romero's two-out, three-run homer to left-center cut the deficit to 7-4, but after EC got the tying run to the plate in Lily Wainwright, Cain was able to get a ground out to second to end it.

Meredith Fontenot, Mizelle, Jayden Sawyer and Mak. Jones all had multiple hits in the win.

Cain punched out 10 against two walks in a complete game.
