Chase Russell grabbed his first collegiate win in a quality start and both
Braden Smith and
Brice Ainsworth homered in a big, 5-4 win at Nunez Friday night to close out non-conference play.
Jones College improved to 14-5 and dropped Nunez to 19-5. The Bobcats moved to 8-0 all-time against the Pelicans.
Saturday's scheduled game at Delgado has been canceled due to weather in the area.
Nunez struck first in the first on an RBI-groundout but Russell would hold the Pels off the board again until the sixth.
Talan Theriot's sac fly tied the game in the second and a double steal for
Dominick Regira and Br. Smith gave the Bobcats a lead they would not relinquish.
Cole Manuel added an RBI-single in the third before a pair of solo homers in the fourth and fifth extended the lead to 5-1 after five.
Jayce LaCava willed the Pels back in it with a solo homer in the sixth and then hit a two-run shot in the eighth to make it 5-4.
Caden Freeman came on in relief of
Drew Lambert with the bases loaded and nobody out in the eighth and got a strikeout and 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
Freeman worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth and got another 4-6-3 double play and then a strikeout two batters later of LaCava to grab his team-leading fourth save.
Eli Woodard fell to 4-1 for Nunez in 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Jones opens MACCC play at Northwest Wednesday, March 12, a 1 p.m. start.
