No. 4 Jones outscores Coastal-South 18-4 in home-opening sweep

ELLISVILLE – Breelyn Cain tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener and Jones rallied from a 4-0 deficit with an eight-run sixth in the nightcap to sweep a pair over Coastal Alabama-South Tuesday night at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.

Jones, ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA, improved to 5-1 while dropping the Coyotes to 0-4.

The Bobcats embark on a month-long road swing starting Wednesday at Bishop State. Jones will not play at home again until March 2.

Jones 8, Coastal-South 0 (5 inn.)

Cain's two-hitter and Emily Mizelle's 3-for-4, two-double, four-RBI game lifted Jones to a run-rule win in game one.

Jones sent eight to the plate in the first and scored three runs.

Mizelle's first double was a two-run double off the bag at third that extended the JC lead to 5-0 after two.

After Brooklyn Montana's RBI-double scored Cain after a single, Mizelle blasted a two-run double into left-center to walk it off.

Cain struck out five and walked two to improve to 1-1.

Claire Andersen had a pair of hits in the leadoff spot.

Jones 10, Coastal-South 4

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats scored 10 unanswered over their final three at-bats to sweep the day.

The Coyotes scored two in the second and two in the fourth, all on RBI-singles.

Mizelle's solo homer got Jones on the board in the bottom of the fourth and Makynlie Jones homered in the fifth to make it 4-2.

Emma Moore's two-run double tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth and the floodgates opened with six more runs in the inning. Meredith Fontenot added an RBI-double, Jones a two-run double and Andersen an RBI-single.

Anna Grace Whitehead tossed 3.1 relief innings in place of Ava Prejean to get the win. Whitehead scattered three hits and no runs to move to 2-0.

Kaliegh Steverson was 2-for-4 in the DP spot.
