COLUMBUS, Ga. – Fourth-ranked Jones College swept its second straight weekend tournament.
The Bobcats went 5-0 at the NFCA NJCAA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., with three wins over NJCAA Top 15 teams.
Sophomore infielder
Emily Mizelle led the charge at the plate, going 11-for-18 with five home runs and 14 RBIs.
Jones 9, DMACC 8
The weekend started off with a bang with freshman
Addy Shorter hitting a walk-off, two-run double to help the Bobcats rally for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Des Moines Area, 9-8.
Shorter finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Mizelle and
Jayden Sawyer each went yard in the game.
Ava Prejean threw 1.1 relief innings for
Anna Grace Whitehead to get the win.
Jones trailed 4-0 in the fourth before eventually tying it at 4-4 through five. DMACC scored four in the top of the sixth and Jones responded with four in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Jones 6, Illinois Central 1
Prejean scattered two hits, one run and seven strikeouts to improve to 7-0 in the circle and
Breelyn Cain tossed two scoreless innings to close it out.
Makynlie Jones was 4-for-4 with two doubles and Mizelle homered and finished with four RBIs.
A four-spot in the top of the first, thanks to Mizelle's three-run jack, set the tone.
Jones 10, Johnson County 9
The Bobcats held off the Cavaliers in a slugfest to close out the day 3-0.
JCCC scored four in the top of the first thanks to a handful of walks but Jones tied it at 4-4 with four in the second.
Trailing 6-5 in the seventh, the Bobcats used some late magic again to rally for a win.
Marlee Dampeer drew a leadoff walk, and after back-to-back singles, Mizelle hit a three-run homer and
Kaleigh Steverson a solo shot to make it 10-6.
JCCC got three back in the bottom of the seventh before Cain was able to close the game out with a groundout.
Jones 12, Danville Area 2 (5 inn.)
Claire Andersen was 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot and Mizelle and
Laney Little added three hits each in a runaway to open Saturday competition.
Jones scored 10 in the first three innings.
Anna Grace Whitehead scattered six hits and two runs in a complete game to push her season record to 5-0.
Jones 10, Roane State 3
Sawyer allowed two runs in the first but only one the final six innings, hit a homer and was helped by Mizelle and
Lillian Evans home runs in closing out a 5-0 weekend.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Jones scored nine runs over its final three at-bats.
Evans was 3-for-4 and
Laney Little 3-for-3.
Sawyer struck out a season-high 14 batters in a complete game, allowing the three runs and just three hits.
