ELLISVILLE – No. 5 Jones continued its recent dominance of Northeast Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Ky Pernell led five Bobcats in double figures with a game-high 20 points as Jones edged Northeast, 74-72.
Jones won its ninth straight to improve to 23-3, 9-1 MACCC and Northeast dropped to 23-4, 7-4 MACCC. The Bobcats have won 9 of 10 against the Tigers.
Jones twice trailed by a bucket in the opening half, but would control the game the final 25 minutes.
Avery Thomas II's fastbreak dunk put the Bobcats up a game-high 65-51 with 7:44 to play before the Tigers mounted a furious comeback.
A barrage of three-pointers started a 15-3 run to pull the Tigers within 68-66 with 2:41 to play.
Ky's layup made it 70-66 before Terrence Marco's dunk pulled NEMCC back within a bucket with 1:18 left.
A strong, driving layup by
LJ Hackman and two free throws by
Kylan Howze made it 74-70 before a Tiger layup made it 74-72.
Ensuing turnovers by both teams allowed Jones to inbound the ball at midcourt and run out the clock with just under :01 to play.
Behind Ky's 20, Thomas had 15 points and 10 boards, Hackman 14,
Dimp Pernell 11 and Howze 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks off the bench.
Jones shot 43 percent against 36 for Northeast. The Tigers' bench outscored Jones 39-12.
Jones travels to Pearl River, 21-4, 10-1 MACCC, Thursday for a 7:30 tip.
