MERIDIAN – Jones College opened the season with an 8-1 victory over defending NJCAA Division III champion Oxford-Emory (Georgia) here Saturday at the Northeast Park Tennis Center.
Jones swept the doubles points with
Helen Hernandez (Venezuela) and
Molly Bennett (Madison Central) winning No. 1 doubles over Lily Liu and Olha Los, 4-0, 4-0.
Theresa Emelio (Australia) and
Maria Martinez (Argentina) won No. 2 doubles over Chloe Macaluso and Marie Chastel, 4-1, 4-2.
Josie Tullos (Newton County) and
Ansley Tomkins (Northwest Rankin) won No. 3 doubles over Arba Zhao and Samantha Goldberg, 4-0, 4-0.
Hernandez beat Lily Liu in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 and Bennett defeated Ellen Liu in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Martinez downed Macaluso in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4 and Emelio whipped Los in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Annabelle Simmons (Lamar School) fell to Chastel in No. 5 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 0-1 (5) and Tomkins beat Goldberg in No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-0.
The Bobcats play a Monday exhibition match at Mississippi College and a Friday exhibition match at Delta State. They resume regular season play at home on Feb. 10 vs East Central.
