Jones closes Florida weekend with three straight run-rules

MARIANNA, Fla. – After dropping its first game at Chipola, 6-5, on Friday afternoon, No. 4 Jones College rolled off three straight run-rule victories to close opening weekend 3-1.

The Bobcats defeated Thomas University JV and Enterprise State, 15-0 and 8-0 in five, and Chipola 11-3 in six innings.

On a gusty Friday morning against the Indians, Jones jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third but gave up five in the bottom half to drop the opener by a run.

They'd win the next three by a combined 34-3.

A dozen Bobcats picked up a hit over the two days, led by Makynlie Jones' eight and five apiece from Kaleigh Steverson and Meredith Fontenot

Jones 15, Thomas JV 0 (5 inn.)

Ava Prejean tossed a one-hitter and Jayden Sawyer and Emma Moore had three RBIs apiece as part of a 14-hit attack.

Jones and Sawyer each went yard.

Jones scored three in the first and second and nine in the fifth to close it out.

Jones 8, Enterprise State 0 (5 inn.)

Anna Grace Whitehead tossed a two-hitter in her Bobcat debut with five strikeouts and a walk.

Fontenot hit a three-run homer and Steverson was 2-for-2 with an RBI-double.

Jones 11, Chipola 3 (6 inn.)

Back-and-forth the first two innings, a six-run sixth for Jones helped the Bobcats get revenge from an opening-day loss to the Indians.

Sawyer, Jones and Marlee Dampeer combined for nine of Jones' 14 hits, including a double apiece.

Prejean settled in to hang four straight zeroes to end the game and struck out a career-high six Indians.

Jones hosts Coastal Alabama-South for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 4. It's the only chance in February to see the Cats at home.

Single-game and season tickets can be purchased through jcbobcats.com/tickets. Prices go up at the gate.
