ELLISVILLE – It lived up to the hype.
In front of a raucous crowd on both sides inside A.B. Howard Gymnasium Monday night, Mississippi Gulf Coast outlasted No. 11 Jones, 116-114, in double overtime to snap a 10-game losing streak to the Bobcats.
MGCCC's (11-1) victory also snapped a 27-game home winning streak for Jones.
In a game that had 28 lead changes and 23 ties, it was two Za'Kariyea Hamilton free throws with 5.8 seconds left in double overtime that lifted the Bulldogs to victory.
Neither team led by more than six all night, six total players fouled out and we shot 89 combined free throws.
Jones (10-3) had an 88-84 lead with two minutes to play in regulation after a pair of
Jay Tyler free throws and
Dylan Rowe layup.
The lead was 89-86 Jones with the ball and 27.8 seconds left before a 10-second call gave the ball back to MGCCC with a chance to tie.
Duran Parish drew an Oscar-worthy foul in front of the Bulldogs' bench with 10 seconds to play and was awarded three shots. Parish initiated all the contact with Tyler to draw the foul. He'd then hit all three shots to send the game into overtime.
Jones had the ball and went the length of the floor but didn't get a shot off.
Still tied through a first overtime, Jones looked poised to win it in double overtime.
Braylon Barnes' layup made it 103-101 and six straight for
Keron Jackson extended the lead to 109-103 with 3:53 left.
Duke Ross' two free throws tied it at 114-114 with 1:15 to play, however, and after consecutive misses by Rowe and Tyler, gave the ball back to MGCCC.
Hamilton dribbled up the court after a rebound by Jaron Lemelle and was mistakenly fouled by
Quey'Sean Taylor who thought the Bobcats were trailing and needed to foul.
Hamilton sunk both free throws.
Jones had a great inbounds play underneath the MGCCC goal with 5.8 seconds left and gave Tyler a chance to force triple overtime, but his layup spun just out and would end a nearly 2:45 game.
Parish had 29 points on 7-of-24 shooting and 13-of-16 free throws. LeMelle added 20 points and 16 boards off the bench. Six Bulldogs in all scored in double figures.
Rowe had a career-best 29 points, Barnes 27 and Tyler 18.
Derek Hollman Jr. had eight points and six rebounds in place of
Bob Dickson who faced foul trouble all night.
Jones will have to flush it and get ready for two more tough games in the Gulf Coast State Classic Dec. 12-13 in Panama City, Florida. The Cats face No. 5 Northwest Florida State and No. 6 Gulf Coast State.
