Tyler's career-high 29 not enough as Cats drop second in Panama City

Jones fell to 0-4 vs. ranked teams

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – A 25-4 Gulf Coast State run midway through the second half blew open what was a three-point game as the Commodores ran away with a 101-81 win over Jones to close out a two-day classic.

No. 6 Gulf Coast State improved to 14-1 while No. 11 Jones dropped to 10-5 overall and 0-4 against ranked teams this year.

The Commodores hit their first four three-pointers and six of seven shots to take an early 12-6 lead.

Dylan Rowe's pair of free throws with 8:59 left in the opening half tied the game for the first time at 23-23 and Jones took its first lead 27-26 minutes later on two Keron Jackson free throws.

Jay Tyler's fourth three-pointer of the first half gave Jones its largest lead, 40-36, with 1:53 left but GCSC closed the half with an 8-0 run.

Tyler had 14 first-half points en route to a career-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 7-of-13 from three.

What was a 66-63 Gulf Coast lead with 11:42 left quickly got away from Jones when the Commodores scored 25 of the next 29 points to lead a game-high 91-67.

GCSC shot 59 percent for the game on 15 threes and all five starters scored in double figures. Devontes Cobbs had 20 and Traevon Koch 19 points off the bench.

Jones shot 39 percent, including 12-of-32 from three-point.

Behind Tyler's career game, Rowe had 16 points, Jackson 14, Braylon Barnes seven and Bob Dickson six points and nine rebounds.

The Bobcats return to action on Monday, Jan. 5 at home against Southern University-Shreveport. It's the first meeting since 2022 and just the third ever.
