Cleaves' career night lifts Jones to 58-49 win over Baton Rouge

ELLISVILLE – It was ugly, but it was a win.

Jones outscored Baton Rouge 21-12 in the final quarter to grind out a 58-49 win Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

The Bobcats, 7-1, bounced back from their first loss of the year and dropped the Bears to 4-5 in sweeping the season series.

Jones trailed 12-7 after one quarter, with Jakera Ducksworth banking in a near half court heave to beat the buzzer. Jones was just 2-for-13 in the quarter and turned it over nine times.

BRCC led 22-20 at half thanks to a buzzer-beating three by Shelcie LeBlanc and it was 37-all after three quarters.

Big minutes from Zantasheia Mallett in the fourth helped the Bobcats rally. Mallett would finish with six points and seven rebounds and Lamarah Cleaves had six of her season-high 24 in the final period.

BRCC outshot Jones 38 to 33 percent from the floor but Jones won the rebounding battle, 40-27.

Jones forced double digit steals for the sixth time in eight games, with BRCC committing 26 turnovers.

Larissa Hubbard finished the night with nine points and Ducksworth added seven points and nine boards.

Jones returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Lawson State.
