ELLISVILLE – Five players scored in double figures to lead No. 6 Jones College to a 98-90 victory over Lawson State here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Jones improved to 6-0 with its 25th consecutive home win. Lawson State dropped to 2-4.
Bob Dickson (Memphis) posted his fifth double-double in six games, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Wesley Lindsey (Central Hinds Academy) had his first double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Braylon Barnes (Brandon) had 27 points and nine rebounds.
Keron Jackson (Memphis) had 15 points and
Jay Tyler (Glen Allan) had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Jones took a 10-2 lead in the opening three-plus minutes when Dickson scored on a tip in with 16:28 showing. Lawson State came back and only trailed 38-36 at halftime.
The Cougars took their only lead of the night when Lago Stanback made a 3-pointer to make it 47-46 with 16:14 remaining.
The Bobcats then went on a 14-0 run and took a 60-47 lead on a pair of Jackson free throws with 13:11 to play.
But Lawson State would not go away and came back within 90-86 with 1:08 left when De'Arion Holley made a free throw. But Jones went 8-for-8 at the free throw line over the final 55 seconds to seal the win.
Stanback paced the Cougars with 21 points. Keaton Cross added 18 and Hannibal Smith had 11.
Jones made 30-of-66 shots for 46 percent, 38-of-46 free throws for 83 percent and was 0-for-9 from behind the arc. The Cougars were 14-of-40 from the floor for 40 percent, 10-of-35 from deep for 29 percent and 16-of-22 from the foul line for 73 percent.
The Bobcats outrebounded Lawson State, 53-40. Jones had 10 turnovers and the Cougars only had eight.
Jones outscored the Cougars, 58-32, on points in the paint.
