WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Jones College improved to 5-0 on the young season with a pair of wins at the ASU Mid-South Lady Greyhound Classic over the weekend.
The Bobcats beat the hosts, 79-44, on Friday and then defeated National Park College, 57-56, Saturday on
Lamarah Cleaves' go-ahead layup with 7.7 seconds remaining.
On Friday against ASU Mid-South, Jones held the Lady Greyhounds without a field goal the opening quarter, with all seven of their points coming off the free throw line.
Jones scored the game's first 10 points and led 43-17 at halftime.
ASU Mid-South had three first-half field goals and just 11 made for the game.
Sanyla Smith had a career-high 15 points off the bench and added six rebounds and four steals.
Zharia Leflore had 16,
Teeale Wells 12 and Cleaves and
Anna-Patrice Patterson eight each.
Jones led National Park by three at half and by five after three quarters, but it would come down to the final minute.
After an 8-0 run for the Nighthawks put them in front, it was Cleaves' layup off an inbounds play in front of Jones' bench that provided the go-ahead basket.
Jakera Ducksworth had a season-high 18 points, nine of them in the fourth quarter, and added nine rebounds. Smith had nine points and seven rebounds.
Jones aims for a 6-0 start Monday night, welcoming Lawson State to A.B. Howard Gymnasium for a 5 o'clock tip.
