Bears end 14-game losing streak to Jones with 26-23 win

SUMMIT – Chris Hunter scored on a 1-yard run with 22 seconds left to lift Southwest to a 26-23 victory over Jones College here Saturday evening at John I. Hurst Stadium.

Christian Baglione's (Northwest Rankin) 50-yard field goal attempt as time expired was no good and the Bears had secured their first win over Jones since 2010.

Jones is now 4-4 overall, 1-4 in the MACCC South. The Bears improve to 3-5 and 2-3.

The Bobcats trailed 17-7 midway through the third quarter when they scored on three straight possessions to take the lead.

Quarterback Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) broke several tackles and powered his way into the end zone from 20 yards out to end a 46-yard, three-play drive. Baglione's extra point made it 17-14 with 8:40 remaining in the third period.

On its next drive Jones went 33 yards in seven plays with Baglione's 30-yard field goal tying the game at 17-17 with 3:56 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats then drove 36 yards in five plays and scored on a 3-yard run by Glover. But the extra point attempt was blocked and Gary Bailey returned the kick all the way for a two-point play for the Bears to make it 23-19 in favor of Jones with 13:45 to play in the fourth quarter.

Southwest then drove deep into Bobcat territory, but Gavin Drones (Magee) intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the threat.

Two possessions later the Bears started their final drive at their own 40-yard line with 2:42 left. A controversial pass completion of 27 yards from quarterback Silas Corder to Antione Johnson gave Southwest the ball at the Bobcat 31. After a replay review of the catch, the call on the field was upheld.

The Bears moved to a first and goal at the 4-yard and would eventually face a third and goal from inside the 1-yard line. Hunter was stopped on third down, but scored on the fourth down play. Sergio Neyra's extra point made it 26-23.

Tyree Barnett (Hattiesburg) returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the Jones' 45.

Glover connected with Kaiden Smith (Oak Grove) for 20 yards and JQ Gray (Oak Grove) for three more yards to the Southwest 32. But Baglione's kick was short and the game was over.

The game started well for the Bobcats as Lathan Lewis (Pass Christian) recovered a fumbled Southwest punt at the Bear 10-yard line. Santae McWilliams Jr. (Saraland, Ala.) would score on a 1-yard run and Baglione's extra point made it 7-0 with 6:28 to play in the opening quarter.

Southwest tied it when Hunter scored on a 54-yard run to end an 85-yard, three-play drive. Neyra's extra point made it 7-7 with 12:22 to play in the first half.

Neyra's 42-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter ended a 35-yard, eight-play drive and gave the Bears a 10-7 halftime lead.

Hunter scored on a 3-yard run with 12:12 to play in the third quarter to end a 56-yard, four-play march. Neyra's conversion made it 17-7.
