Jones picks up 3-2 win over previously-unbeaten Daytona State

MILLBROOK, Ala. – No. 2 Jones jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 45:14 but had to hold off two late goals from No. 7 Daytona State to hang on for a 3-2 victory Thursday in a rain-soaked match at Auburn-Montgomery.

The match was picked up last-minute with the cancelation of Jones' scheduled match against St. Louis up in Senatobia.

Daytona State (3-1) looked to take the lead five minutes in, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Falcons celebrated like they had scored, but after some discussion from the referees, they deemed it went over the net and not in.

Sherline King scored the first of two goals five minutes later to make it 1-0 Cats.

Marlie Jones fought off a Falcon defender in front of the net and scored off a cross into the box from Abby Sheriff in the 19th minute.

Leading 2-0 at the half, King scored 14 seconds into the second half to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Back-to-back goals for Daytona State in a four-minute span pulled the match within 3-2, but the Falcons would not threaten again.

Jona Hennings picked up a season-high five saves and allowed both goals.

Jones hosts Northwest at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Ellisville. It'll be No. 2 vs. No. 1 in the NJCAA.
