Box Score PLANO, Texas – Jones College finished 12th in the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships this week at Collin College.
The Bobcats finished with 17.5 points, the most for any MACCC team. Itawamba finished 13th with 15.5 points with Mississippi Gulf Coast at 15th with 13 points. Copiah-Lincoln tied for 18th with 11.5 points, Meridian was 21st with 8 points, Hinds was 25th with four points and East Central tied for 27th with two points.
Tyler Junior College won the event with 46 points. It is the 18th national championship for TJC tennis. Cowley was second with 44 points and Eastern Florida finished third.
Jones' No. 1 doubles team of
Charlie Brady and
Matias Ruiz made history by advancing to the winner's bracket semifinals. It had never happened for an MACCC doubles team.
Brady and Ruiz beat Lucas Fox and Adrienne Weisser of Harford (Maryland) in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. They defeated Fabian Juarez and Gabriel Masu of Hinds in round two, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Brady and Ruiz then upset No. 2 seed Jose Castillo and Minjae Kim of Collin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the rain-delayed semifinals, they lost to Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod'Abalo Isak Padio of Iowa Central, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 in a matchbreaker on May 17. The third set was a 10-point tiebreaker that Iowa Central won, 10-5. It is recorded as a 1-0 result. Gandonou and Padio went on to win the championship over the No. 1 seed from Cowley (Kansas), 6-4, 6-7 (9), 1-0 (9).
In opening round matches on May 13, Ruiz beat Blake Roberts of Coastal Alabama in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Brady defeated Ferrian Bomstre of Wallace St. (Alabama) in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Duvan Santiago Torres downed Sibusuo Dube of Lewis and Clark College (Illinois) in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and
Dawson Do beat Logan Schultz of Lewis and Clark in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Alex Holder defeated Christian Lopez of Weatherford (Texas), 6-4, 6-4 in No. 6 singles. In No. 5 singles,
Hudson Hans lost to Luke Takumi of Collin, 1-6, 0-6.
Holder and Torres defeated Dube and Schultz in No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0. Do and Hans lost to Brock Dawson and McArthur Swain of Jacksonville (Texas), 3-6, 4-6.
In May 14 matches, Ruiz lost to Alexi Khamrotan of Pratt (Kansas), 1-6, 6-1, 5-7 and Brady fell to Reiya Komagata of Cowley, 2-6, 0-6. Torres lost to Guy Dagan of Collin, 2-6, 4-6 and Do fell to Dan Persson of Tyler, 2-6, 1-6. Holder lost to Alejandro Gonzalez of Cowley, 2-6, 2-6. Hans defeated Logan Brandner of Illinois Valley in a consolation round match, 8-3.
Holder and Torres defeated Alex Ballinger and Gabriel Cuenca of Pratt, 7-6, 6-2.
On May 15, Hans lost to Mateo Prado of Barton (Kansas), 2-8. Holder and Torres fell to Shane Tapera and Gabriel Gray of Barton, 5-7, 0-6. Do and Hans lost to Juan Amor and Brett Foster of Wallace State, 3-8.
