Jones tops Itawamba 5-2 to claim second region title in three years

ELLISVILLE – After enduring heartbreak a year ago in the region championship game to rival Mississippi Gulf Coast, Jones is back on top of NJCAA Region 23.

The Bobcats defeated Itawamba, 5-2, on Saturday morning to claim their second region title in three seasons.

Jones defeated Northeast 5-0 on Thursday and No. 21 Copiah-Lincoln 5-0 on Friday to reach the championship match.

Jones won all three doubles points Saturday to grab a 3-0 lead.

Charlie Brady/Matias Ruiz won 8-2 over Tasso Moreira/Joan Mateu Ramis Pascual for the first point and the next two spots followed.

Itawamba got on the board at No. 1 doubles when Matias Ruiz had to retire after rolling his ankle. Ruiz was leading 3-0 in the first set.

Alex Holder won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles over Ben Orr to make it 4-1 Bobcats.

Hudson Hans fell at No. 5 singles to make it 4-2 Jones before Dawson Do's 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles clinched the win.

Jones will compete in the NJCAA National Tournament May 13-17 at Collin College.
